SEG Plaza (赛格广场, Sàigé Guǎngchǎng) is a 71-floor mixed-use skyscraper located at the intersection of Huaqiang North Road and Zhenbei Road, Futian District, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. Completed in 1999, the tower rises 292 metres above sea level and serves as the flagship landmark of the world's largest electronics wholesale district, Huaqiangbei.
The building is operated by the Shenzhen Electronics Group (SEG Group), one of China's earliest state-backed electronics conglomerates, founded in 1985 under chairman Ma Fuyuan. The lower floors of the tower — commonly referred to as the SEG Electronics Market (赛格电子市场) — house over 3,000 vendor stalls dealing in electronic components, semiconductors, consumer electronics, mobile phones, laptops, accessories, and LED products.
Historical Significance
SEG Plaza is arguably the most historically significant building in Chinese technology history. In 1998, the year the building's predecessor was reconstructed as the modern 71-floor tower, Pony Ma Huateng and four Shenzhen University colleagues founded Tencent from a small office inside the adjacent SEG Science and Technology Park — with a starting capital of just 500,000 CNY. From this origin point in the SEG complex, Tencent grew to become China's most valuable company and a US$900 billion enterprise.
Beyond Tencent, the SEG district has produced more than 50 billionaires from people who started with a single one-meter counter in the building's early years. The market's proximity to Shenzhen's manufacturing base, component suppliers, and export infrastructure made it the undisputed global hub for hardware entrepreneurship.
Notable structural incident: In March 2021, SEG Plaza experienced an unusual vibration event that caused a temporary evacuation. Investigations by Shenzhen authorities concluded the oscillation was caused by vortex-induced resonance triggered by wind conditions, not structural failure. The building was cleared and fully reopened within days.
Architecture & Design
The tower was designed by the Shenzhen Architectural Design and Research Institute and constructed between 1996 and 1999. Its tubular steel frame structure was considered innovative for its era in mainland China. The building features a distinctive latticed steel exterior and connects via an elevated walkway to the adjacent SEG E-Market building, creating a continuous retail ecosystem spanning two major towers.
